World Top 20 June 2014 (Special Edition)

Models - Record Edition (Again)

With a massive 29.238 plug-ins sold in June (And still without South Korea and Belgium numbers), the global market for electric cars broke this month the 28.709 units sold last December, a record many (Me included) thought it would last at least a couple of years, after all, it lasted just six months, to put these numbers into context, the same month last year had 16.017 units sold...

There were record sales from several models, like the Tesla Model S (3.933 units), Ford Fusion Energi (1.949) or the BYD Qin (1.055), and an impressive stat, 11(!) models sold more than 1.000 units last month.

After a hard fight, where the Model S changed positions with the Outlander PHEV in the fight for #2, the japanese SUV benefited from a good performance at home (1.300 sales in Japan), to win back the Silver Medal at the end of the counting.

Comparing this enlarged Top 20 from the first half of this year, with last December, we can envision several changes:

- Chevrolet Volt down three positions to #5;

- Ford Fusion Energi up three positions to #6, already having sold more this year (6.294) than in the whole 2013 (6.206);

- Chinese cars are making their presence felt, with 5 models in the Top 20 (Two in the Top 10), when last year there were only two (Chery QQ3 EV in #11 and BYD e6 in #17);

- The german duo, i3 and e-Up! are higher in the table, with the Beemer consistently improving its performance month after month;

- Renault models are still recovering from a horrible start this year, but the Zoe is already in shape, having been #9 in June, with 1.024 units.

Because this is a full year edition, the ranking includes cars from #11 to #20, where we can see some interesting facts, like the #14 Volvo V60 Plug-In far away from last year performances (It ended in #7 last year), just like the Mitsu I-Miev, #17 this year, when in '13 it was a regular appearance in the Top 10.

Manufacturers - Ford on Fire

In the Manufacturers ranking, Ford is going from strength to strength, selling 3.164 units, climbing again and ending the month in #5.

Above it we've got Nissan in #1, again losing share, now it's at 20%, followed from a far by Mitsubishi and Tesla, fighting for #2.

#4 Toyota has Ford right behind it and has to improve sales if it wants to keep its position, while Renault is back at #7, surpassing BYD.

Looking below the surprising #10 Kandi, we see three newcomers in the ranking: Zotye in #15, Porsche in #17 and Cadillac in #19, these last two outsold Honda in the ranking, which is a strange thing to see...

  1. Gasp!!! The e-Up! is threatening the Zoe?! I know brand snobbery and people first walking in to get a VW plays a part but this shouldn't happen!

    I also find it hilarious how Honda once said that it was the leading innovator and so on, so on for electric drive vehicles when asked if they looks at Tesla's patents, while all they've managed to do is sell is 401 units, in EV-crazed California.

    Anyway, man, August 1st is coming, and I'm absoloutely damned that I won't be able to see Irish July sales on the day they come out. Just to give you a heads up, as you know beepbeep.ie is where you can find them.

  2. The Zoe climbed two spot this month, so in May the e-Up! was above the french hatch, and all that with VW not even making a real effort to sell their electric offspring...

    As for Honda, and speaking as a long time fan (And buyer) of the brand, i think they are losing touch with the "Innovation" tag, like Honda, Toyota is betting heavily in Fuell Cells, but nevertherless it has the Prius Plug-In as one of the top sellers when it comes to plug-ins. And what has Honda got? With 401 EV's this year, it's less than the "flop" Cadillac ELR.

  3. Honda IMA hybryds are becoming obsolet, and I even didn´t know Honda has actually an eV-Jazz/Fit

    1. Hell, IMA hybrids were outdated right at the time they were launched, but people (Me included) liked it because:

      a) They were more fun to drive than a Prius;

      b) They were cheaper.

      The problem for the current Honda hybrids is that convencional gasoline cars, like the VW Golf family, Ford Focus 1.0 Ecoboost , Citröen C4 Cactus, etc. are already close in gas consumption AND most of are faster than the average Insight.

      According to specs, the Fit/Jazz EV is actually quite good, which makes even more strange as to why doesn't Honda invest more in selling them, it seems that bean counters became more important than engineers in Honda, which is a shame really, since the japanese brand buit its success on innovation and engineering.

      Oh Honda, why are you letting your people/buyers down?

  4. Hi Jose. Just for the sake of accuracy, and based on today's Tesla's 2Q 2014 report, actual global sales of the Model S were 7,579 units during 2Q 2014, plus 6,547 during 1Q 2014, add up to 14,036 units sold during the first six months of 2014 (see http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/ABEA-4CW8X0/3334623709x0x772849/0cdad2cf-0497-41a3-ad2a-788f57412777/Tesla%20Q2'14%20Shareholder%20Letter.pdf).

    Your figure overestimated sales by over 500 units (I guess due to estimates of US or Chinese sales, as European reports are more accurate), but nevertheless, the Model S keeps its third place in worldwide sales and as a manufacturer.

    Keep the hard work and thanks for your effort in keeping track of PEV sales around the world.

    1. Oops! I forgot. Based on Tesla's quarterly reports, cumulative Model S sales reached 39,163 units up to June 2014. Adding about 2,500 Roadsters, Tesla Motors has already sold about 41,600 all-electric cars.

  5. Now it's official: Honda kills (discontinues) the Insight & Fit/jazz-EV due to low sales in October.
